Figure. 25
Based on the survey that I have conducted, there are 32 out of 51 of people who supported therapy treatment and the rest of 18 supported both treatment for depression, but why therapy is so demanding across the people?
Figure.26 shows the rate of respondent of preferred treatment to depression
In this chapter I'm going to explore the treatment which is as effective as antidepressant and lower cost treatment than anti-depressant - Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).
MBCT is a treatment with combination of elements from cognitive therapy and mindfulness meditation exercises such as mindful breathing, relaxing and sensory focusing to help to cure depression and preventing it from relapse (Mental Health Foundation).
Mindfulness meditation is an integration of a person's thought, feeling and behaviours. By practising mindfulness can helps a person to become more observant, focus and pay attention to the present moment or something happy and shifts away the negatives thoughts that trapped in a person. Mindfulness meditation also allows a person to build up emotional tolerance. It helps a person to acknowledge, confront and cope with their issues and problems, rather than running away or avoiding them (Paul, 2007, p. 142).
Most importantly, there's no side effect on mindfulness meditation practices (Psychology Today, 2016). According to advises from physician and spiritual advisor Deepak Chopra, if a person encounter side effects for meditation, the person is not doing it correctly (Opposing Views, 2016).
Based on a research, some people who suffered with long-term depression that using anti-depressant alone are impotent to relapse after they stop taking it. Therefore by practising mindfulness meditation not only giving a person new set of skills but it could also be an alternative way of preventing depression. One of the key benefits of meditating is to help a person going through the process of brooding, which is by practicing how to become more compassionate to themselves and the surrounding people (Psychology Today, 2016).
A person who practices meditation will experience an increasing of calmness, restfulness and alertness. By doing that a person's mood will fill with positive energy by liberating a person's mind, brain and body and cast away depression. It is essential for treating depression by doing meditation to balance and optimise a person's body and mind, therefore, bringing the sense of freedom and relaxing (EOC Institute).
