CAUSE OF DEPRESSION.

There's is no particular cause of depression. The cause of depression is different from person to person and it can be triggered from many reasons. Research shows that a person might diagnose with depression when they get older (NHS). Further in this chapter I am going to explore the understanding of working patterns of a depressed brain, how and why it happens.

Below are some common factors that cause depression:

Figure. 24

Genetics

When there is family history who diagnosed with depression, there are chances that the next generation may inherit it (Health line, 2016).

Biochemical

Some researchers found out that depression can caused by changes in the brain chemistry. Neurotransmitters in the brain function as stimulating human emotion, depression can cause by the imbalance of these brain chemistry (Health line, 2016).

Life events

A person's unpleasant events, traumatic past or sudden changes in life events such as death and loss of love one, divorce, abuse, unemployment and many more factors can all contribute to depression (Mind, 2013).

Hormonal

Hormone changes or imbalance in human could lead a person into depressed mood (Health line, 2013).

Season

Lack of sunlight during wintertime could make a person to become depressed (Seasonal affective disorder), but the condition could fade away once wintertime is over (Health line, 2013).

Chronic illness

When a person encounter with long lasting illnesses for instance diabetes, heart disease or HIV could lead them into a depressive state (WebMD, 2016).

Substances abuse

Some people choose to intake alcohol or drugs to calm their emotion whenever they are feeling down, in fact they only make them worst because alcohol and some drugs are central nervous system depressant (Mind, 2013 & Futures of Palm Beach, 2016).

Systems in our brain

Humans are born with the abilities to think, react and ruminate as well as the ability to develop various emotions such as happy, exciting, anger, anxious, and many more. There are three main emotion systems in our brain that impact our mind and affect our physical behaviours.

  • A system that helps to reflect things that threatening.

  • A system that increase the desire and activates the motivation.

  • A system that gives a sense of contentment, happiness and calmness.

  •

When a person depressed, they break the balance between these three systems, therefore resulting in a person who more likely to trigger negative emotion for instance anger, sad, guilt, irritability and many others rather than positive reflects (Paul, 2007, p. 14-18).

The thoughts of a person can also affect the balance between the three systems. The ability of a human brain to think and portrait images are a key fact of affecting a person's mood. A person who constantly focuses on negative thoughts and ruminating can seriously affects their moods. The ability to have a sense of self-awareness in human being also become a factor of causing depression when they overly thinking or worrying too much of their present or future (Paul, 2007, p. 28-30).

The way a person's thoughts and imagines that combined together can impact a person's brain and body. Thoughts and imagines can have a serious effect on evoking a person's reaction to their body and brain.  In order to bring back the balance in a person's emotional system and fight back depression, they should learn how to cope with their thinking and behaviors and engage exercises for their minds like involve in meditation is a good example (Paul, 2007, p. 36).
